ASSIGNMENT ONE

Aesthetic Over Accuracy: Why It’s Good Nolan’s The Odyssey Prioritizes Artistry Over All Else

The most-anticipated movie of the year has some discourse, but Nolan is truly swinging big for this grand epic

Whether it was a force read in school or the phase of being obsessed with Greek mythology, you probably know the tale of Odysseus. When it comes to Christopher Nolan, you know his hits well, whether it was the recent explosion of a hit, Oppenheimer, or the classic brain-melter, Inception, he raises the stakes of what movies can do in every film he makes. The Odyssey is no exception.

However, the newest iteration of the classic myth is going beyond what you have seen before. The Odyssey is shaping up to be the biggest movie of 2026, with hype extending so far that tickets have gone on sale a whole year in advance. With trailers and previews dropping, some people have concerns about the movie so far, citing its historical inaccuracy in terms of costumes and locations.

But I ask you, would you sacrifice historical accuracy if it came to feeling the nuances of the movie more?

Nolan’s artistic vision is meant to make you feel more immersed than ever. Bridging an ancient myth with modern storytelling. A perfect example of this is sacrificing the drab bronze looks of the age for the sleek matte black armor of Agamemnon, turning the character into a more domineering, scary version of the villain. Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer of the film, has crafted him into the pinnacle picture of menace, tactility, and strength that will serve Nolan’s vision of the epic.

The new take is going to make you more invested, feel more, and make you a part of this world in a way you have never been before. The addition of the film being fully shot on large-format IMAX is meant to teleport you into a mythical world of ancient Greece, fighting cyclops, facing the wrath of Poseidon, and trying to find the way back home, ultimately bringing you on the epic journey with Odysseus.

So are you ready to go on the journey of a lifetime?

The Odyssey is releasing on July 17, 2026. The film was written and directed by Christopher Nolan.
